Food for Cut-Flowers?

I’m doing an experiment for biology to see which household substances are best for preserving cut-flowers compared to the sachet which is usually supplied with them.

So what household substances should I use?

    Lemonade or bleach

Fizzy lemonade that’s gone flat makes excellent flower food.Fill the vase with 3/4 water and 1/4 flat lemonade.

  3. Ash says:

Salt and Sugar (you could compare potassium and sodium based salt to see if theres any difference.) Only a small amount though like a teaspoon in a litre.

Sugar is a well known substitute and cutting the stems on the diagonal helps as well. I did hear about the method of dry frying the ends lightly in a pan as well. Good luck in your experiments xx.

Well my friend watered hers with bottled water & they lasted ages, were as her nieghbour who she also brought some for at the same time, only lasted about aweek,I know it’s not a house hold substance but you might still find it of some use.

sparkling water and a disolvable aspirin

  9. OKIM IM says:

    Soda.

Soda has sucrose and preservative. Sucrose is the sugar transported in the phloem. Alternatively, you can try soluble plant food or sugar and aspirin. Vary the concentrations to see which is optimum.
